The weight loss supplement market is one of the most heavily marketed — and most heavily hyped — categories in health. Here's how to separate products with genuine clinical support from those riding marketing trends.
Green Tea Extract (EGCG + Caffeine) is among the most studied natural metabolic support compounds. The combination of EGCG (400–500mg) and caffeine creates synergistic thermogenesis. Look for decaffeinated versions if you're caffeine-sensitive and pair with a separate caffeine source.
Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from konjac root that expands in the stomach to promote satiety. It's one of very few weight loss ingredients with an EFSA-approved health claim. Dose: 3–5g daily taken with large amounts of water before meals.
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is a serotonin precursor that helps reduce appetite and emotional eating. Clinical trials at 300–900mg per day show modest but consistent reductions in caloric intake.
CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) from safflower oil has modest but consistent evidence for reducing body fat percentage while preserving lean mass. Effective dose: 3.2g per day taken with meals over at least 12 weeks.
Garcinia Cambogia (HCA) remains controversial — early studies were promising, but larger, higher-quality trials show limited benefits beyond placebo. It's included in many formulas; we consider it a secondary ingredient at best.
Avoid any product making claims of extreme or rapid weight loss ("lose 30 pounds in 30 days"). No supplement produces meaningful weight loss without dietary changes and exercise. Be wary of proprietary stimulant blends that don't disclose caffeine content. Hidden stimulants are the most common cause of adverse events in weight loss supplements.
